How Long Do Artificial Flowers Last? What Makes the Difference

White artificial tulips in a ribbed white vase in sunlight

In short: How long artificial flowers keep their look depends mostly on where you place them and how you care for them. Indirect light, regular light dusting, gentle handling and good storage make the biggest difference. When a stem starts to look tired, you can restyle it, move it or replace just that stem.

It's one of the questions we hear most often: how long do artificial flowers actually last? The honest answer is that it depends. Two identical stems can look very different after a while, depending on where they stand and how they're treated. Here's what makes the difference.

What affects how long artificial flowers last?

Light

Strong, direct sunlight is the most common reason colours change over time. A bouquet on a sunny south-facing windowsill will be exposed to much more than one on a hallway sideboard. Indirect daylight is kind to the colours, and artificial flowers don't need light at all, so darker spots are no problem.

Dust

Dust doesn't damage the flowers, but it makes them look flat and grey, and that's what makes them look old. A light dusting now and then keeps them looking fresh. See our guide on how to clean artificial flowers.

Handling

Stems that are moved, bent and rearranged often will show it sooner than stems that stay in one vase. Bending is fine, and it's part of styling, but do it gently, and support the stem just below the flower head.

Heat and humidity

Keep flowers away from direct heat, such as radiators, stoves and candles, and avoid soaking them in water. Normal indoor conditions, including bathrooms, are generally fine.

Storage

Flowers you put away between seasons should be dusted first and stored loosely in a box, with the flower heads on top so nothing gets crushed. Packed tightly in a bag, petals and leaves can lose their shape.

How to make your flowers last longer

  • Place them in indirect light, away from strong sun.
  • Dust them lightly every few weeks.
  • Handle them gently, and reshape petals and leaves with your fingers when needed.
  • Keep them away from heat and open flames.
  • Store them loosely in a box between seasons.
  • Rotate them. Moving flowers between rooms and seasons spreads the wear and keeps the look fresh.

Signs it's time for a change

  • The colour has changed noticeably compared to when you bought it.
  • Petals or leaves no longer hold their shape when you reshape them.
  • A stem has bent or broken in a way you can't style around.
  • Or simply: you've changed your interior and want something new.

What to do when it's time

Restyle before you replace

Often a tired arrangement only needs a new vase, a new spot or a few new stems. Move the flowers from a sunny room to a shadier one, or combine them with something new. One or two fresh single stems can make the whole bouquet feel new.

Give them a second life

Flowers you're tired of may be just right for someone else. Give them to a friend, use them in a guest room, a summer house or a workplace, or use single stems in wreaths and table decorations.

Disposal

Artificial flowers are usually made of several materials together, such as textile, plastic and metal wire. Check your local sorting guidelines, or ask at your recycling centre, how they should be sorted where you live.

Frequently asked questions

Do artificial flowers fade?

Strong direct sunlight can change colours over time. In indirect light, colour changes are much slower.

Can I replace a single stem in a bouquet?

Yes. Our single stems make it easy to refresh a bouquet without replacing all of it.

Is it worth choosing better-quality flowers?

Better-quality stems generally have more natural colour and detail and hold their shape better when you style them, which makes them easier to enjoy over time. Read more in how to make artificial flowers look real.
